Project 2: Forgotten Culture

Subject Matter: Wau (Moon Kite)

After visit few places in the KL. I were choose the Wau (Moon kite) as my subject matter of the forgotten culture. It is culture of malay and also Malaysian National Symbol. The flying of giant kites called Wau is popular in pastime, especially in the East Coast of Malaysia such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah. The kites come in all shapes and sizes and are decorated with colourful paper and strands of thread. Sometimes a bow-shaped device is attached to the kite to give a high-pitched humming sound when flown.

IDEA 1

The main idea is to extract the idea of shape of the curve of the wau (kite). The joining of the kite that tie it together when forced into the shape and the wau of flying movement in the sky.

Below are the prototype for the Crit 1 Session and also the presentation board in A2 size.

IDEA 2

The second prototype was still as same as idea 1 of the shape of the wau that curving and the flying movement when fly on sky. A mechanism was planned to be placed to resembles the movement of flying, going up and down.

FINAL

The final prototype is inspired by shaped of curving when bend and the kite movement when flying.

The movement of the wau while the wau flying on the sky and the wind flow the wau moving that up and down which means no restriction.

The bend will be showing out the shape of wau that forced it into curve shape. Meanwhile to design it to become layers.

Attached is the mechanism derived from the spinning of the wau flying movement flexible. Fusion is the collaboration of movement and the mechanism.

Below is the final prototype derived from the subject, Wau (kite) along with the improved final presentation board in A2 size.
